Abstract/Notes This article explores the nature of historical inquiry and the writing of history through the examination of several types of erroneous thinking that beset the unwary. Munzinger introduces the historian first in the Western tradition in order to define what history is and is not. The narrative continues with an examination of antiquarian, presentist, and journalistic accounts of past events and compares their characteristics with the demands of the modern historical discipline. Munzinger argues that the key to avoiding these pitfalls lies in the notion of historical relevance, a point illustrated by examining the several ways in which a particular event, the recent Palmer College Alumni case, might fit into the larger scheme of legal development and social values.
