Abstract/Notes

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report a case of a 75-year-old female patient with chronic urinary incontinence who improved under chiropractic care.

Clinical Features:  A 75-year-old female presented with symptoms of chronic urinary incontinence. Past history revealed an auto injury and a surgical mesh procedure. She reported that she had been voiding her urine up to three times per night for the previous six years. Her ability to sleep peacefully throughout the night was greatly impaired. Examination and radiographs revealed vertebral subluxations in the cervical and lumbar spine. The absolute rotational angle of C2-C7 was -25.9 degrees compared to the normal value of -42 degrees (38.3% change). The absolute rotational angle of L1-L5 was -19.6 degrees compared to the normal value of -40 degrees (51% change).

Intervention and Outcomes:  The patient was managed using Chiropractic Biophysics protocol. The care consisted of weekly chiropractic adjustments, traction, and exercises. Vertebral subluxations were reduced. There was a 29.7% change in C2-C7 absolute rotational angle and her L1-L5 absolute rotational angle changed 61.2%. Resolution of her urinary incontinence was noted.

Conclusion:  The improvements in this study support the consideration of vertebral subluxations and chiropractic co-management in urinary incontinence.
