Abstract/Notes

Objective: To relay the resolution of cervicogenic dizziness and reduction of persistent upper cervical pain in a 49-year-old female receiving Atlas Orthogonal (AO) Chiropractic for the assessment and correction of upper cervical vertebral subluxation.

Clinical Features: A 49-year-old female sought care for a 1-year history of persistent upper cervical pain and discomfort with acute exacerbations of dizziness. The onset of her presentation was due to a harsh axial trauma to the head after falling off an acroyoga harness. Previous management included kinesiology and manual diversified cervical rotation chiropractic care; with no relief afforded. Reduction in cervical ranges of motion (ROM) and hypertonic cervical paraspinal musculature, were found in conjunction with vertebral subluxation throughout the cervical spine.

Intervention and Outcomes: Chiropractic care using Atlas Orthogonal protocols was provided for the correction of vertebral subluxation. Subjective improvement in dizziness and discomfort and self-reported improvements in quality of life was found. Objective improvements included cervical ROM, cervical region examination and indicators of vertebral subluxation.

Conclusion: A course of chiropractic care, using AO for the correction of vertebral subluxation, was associated with the resolution of cervicogenic dizziness and upper cervical pain and discomfort. Further research is required to determine the role that atlas orthogonal chiropractic care or other upper cervical specific techniques can play in assisting patients with similar presenting conditions.
