Abstract/Notes

Abstract: The examination for spinal tenderness, particularly, spinous process tenderness, appears to be an early 19th century examination procedure, not utilized to any degree before this time period. It came into more regular use with the discovery of the disorder called spinal irritation during this same time period. It is currently a routine pain provocation examination test that has proven to be effective in determining where a spinal disorder exists. This manuscript reviews the history, development, and acceptance of this procedure.
