Generic manipulative medicine has been practiced to a greater or lesser degree for several thousand years. In ancient times it was practiced by some physicians and later by bonesetters, but more recenlty by osteopaths and chiropractors. This paper gives some history of the subject, reveals certain theories and concepts surrounding manipulation. Mention is made concerning the involvement of soft tissues, and especially how sensory afferent impulses may pay an important role relative to the maintenance of dynamic equilibrium of the human body to its environment.
