An electromyographic analysis following chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine was conducted on twelve subjects for the purpose of constructing a model for the study of the physiological effects of spinal manipulation. These effects may be reflected in electromyographically-measured peripheral muscle changes. Twelve out of 12 subjects showed increased muscle activity following manipulation of the cervical spine when compared to the control subjects, and nine out of 12 subjects showed increased muscle strength when compared to subjects who had received only passive cervical spine movements. It was concluded that this model may serve as an effective tool for further research into the efficacy of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy.
