Abstract/Notes

Heparin has gained widespread acceptance as a safe, effective anticoagulant, and in thromboembolism in pregnancy is the anticoagulant of choice.  One of the side effects of long-term, high dosage heparin therapy is osteoporosis and spontaneous vertebral fracture.  Chiropractors and others practicing spinal manipulative therapy should be aware of the risk in treating patients who are on heparin therapy.
