There are several reasons why chiropractic was studied on the local level.  First of all, that is the level where chiropractors practice.  Although they are regulated by the state, they work in the community.  It appears that few historical studies of the profession have had this local orientation.  This is the first historical study of the profession in Provo and also one of the first in Utah.  This paper will describe several prominent living and deceased Provo chiropractors.  Relationships between chiropractors and other health professionals and the interaction between chiropractic and the predominant LDS religion and culture will be briefly examined.  It will be shown how Provo chiropractors have been influenced by changes at the state level and by the presence of Brigham Young University.  It should be emphasized that this is mainly a descriptive work with limited theoretical considerations.
