Abstract/Notes Flexion-distraction therapy, as exemplified by Cox® decompression adjusting techniques, was developed and named in 1973 by James M. Cox (the first-listed author). These procedures have their roots in the manipulative methods employed by early osteopathic physicians and the equipment developed by John V. McManis, D.O., and Lulu McManis, D.O. These methods and associated equipment (Cox flexion-distraction table) have been refined during the last four decades and are the focus of a growing body of basic and clinical research. In this brief review the authors trace the pathways that led to developments in this popular treatment for some forms of low back pain and urge further collaboration among practitioners of the manual healing arts and the research community.
