  Title "Chiropractors against tobacco" pilot project: a practice-based research study

Abstract/Notes Objective: To pilot test the utility of patient educational materials developed by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) on the hazards of tobacco use.

Study Design and Methods: A prospective practice-based research pilot study. Participating doctors of chiropractic (DCs) enrolled 10 consecutive eligible new patients. Patients were questioned about tobacco use and tobacco users were provided with information on tobacco cessation. Patients were followed up by telephone 4-6 weeks later. Results: Of 378 DCs invited, 30 (7.9%) enrolled 181 new patients; 36 of the 173 adults (21%) reported tobacco use. Only 9 tobacco users could be reached for follow-up and none had stopped using tobacco. Ten DCs said they would incorporate the questions into their regular intake procedures and 7 said they would download the WFC brochure.

Conclusion:Chiropractors in this sample do not appear to consider tobacco use important to their practices, even though the prevalence was similar to that in the general U.S. population. DCs would be most likely to use materials requiring little effort or expense on their part.
