Abstract/Notes

Because chiropractors regularly provide care for patients with misalignments of the cervical spine and because these patients may be at risk for vertebral artery damage, it is in the best interests of both the patient and the chiropractor for the practitioner to become more knowledgeable of the vertebral artery and its surrounding structures.

This review discusses relevant anatomy, hemodynamics, and clinical findings related to vertebral artery problems.  Also included is a review of the case history and physical findings relevant to vertebral problems as well as four hemodynamic assessment tests which can be performed in the office to better evaluate the current status of the vertebral arteries and to assist in determining which, if any, types of cervical manipulation are contraindicated.
