Abstract/Notes

Surface electrode paraspinal EMG scanning is gaining popularity as a diagnostic technique in chiropractic practice. Claims made in chiropractic trade journals are reviewed along with scientific and medical literature pertaining to the technique. The medico-legal implications of this procedure are also reviewed.  Paraspinal EMG scanning appears useful in evaluating paraspinal muscle spasm. Some authors report a relationship between pain and elevated paraspinal EMG potentials. Clinicians using paraspinal EMG scanning are cautioned to avoid making claims which cannot be supported in the scientific and medical literature. Paraspinal EMG scanning appears to be a useful tool for the clinician who understands its capabilities and limitations.
