Abstract/Notes

Abstract: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the onset of discomfort or functional impairment prior to menstruation. It typically presents 5 days before the start of menstruation and it must occur for a minimum of 3 consecutive cycles with interference of activities of daily living for the diagnostic criteria. The use of progesterone as treatment for PMS has been evaluated for at least 40 years without convincing results. In 1979, Sampson designed a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of patients treated with progesterone who would then complete a daily menstrual distress questionnaire and retrospective self-assessment. This study showed no significant difference between progesterone and placebo in reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, and in the majority of cases placebo was more effective.
