Abstract/Notes

Objective: The purpose of this study is to report on the positive health outcomes in a child with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) undergoing chiropractic care.

Clinical Features:  A nine-year-old male presented with problems related to coordination in daily activities and a possibility of scoliosis. Type III Klippel-Feil syndrome was diagnosed at age 4.

Intervention & Outcome:  Examination revealed vertebral subluxation, with posture, range of motion and muscle tone abnormalities. Single leg standing and hopping tests were utilized to assess initial and post care balance. Radiographic findings were consistent with Type III KFS. Subluxation correction was delivered by instrument, and exercises were prescribed. Balance testing improved measurably after 34 visits. Coordination in daily activities was reported as improved.

Conclusion: Subluxation correction may be considered an effective co-management option for pediatric patients with KFS and postural balance problems. More research is recommended.
