Abstract/Notes

Objective:  The objective of this case report is to review the patient history and chiropractic management of a 4-month-old female with plagiocephaly and an aversion to tummy time who improved under chiropractic care.

Clinical Features:  Patient presented to the chiropractor with flattening of the right posterior occiput, buckling of the coronal sutures bilaterally, and was unable to tolerate prone positioning due to inability to extend her head and push up with her arms.  Subluxations were found at C1, T2, and S1.

Intervention and Outcomes:  Intervention consisted of high velocity/low amplitude adjustments, sustained contact adjustments, and cranial suture work.  Patient saw an improvement in tummy time toleration and visual improvement of plagiocephaly, as reported by the mother.

Conclusions:  Vertebral subluxation can lead to a sequela of comorbidities, in this case restriction of cervical extension compounded by continuous supine positioning, resulting in deformational plagiocephaly.  Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective in correcting subluxation.
