Abstract/Notes

Objective: To describe the care and outcomes of subluxation-based chiropractic care on a patient with Type I Chiari Malformation and Ehlers-Danlos who presents with daily headaches.

Clinical Features: A 22-year-old female with headaches that has complicating factors of diagnoses of Type I Chiari Malformation and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Interventions and Outcomes: Vertebral subluxation patterns were found in the upper cervical region and C5. Specific subluxation-based care adjustments were delivered using an instrument. After six weeks of care, she reported reduction of headaches from daily to once a week.  At the conclusion of 12 weeks of care, the patient reported further reduction of headaches from once a week to once every other week with decrease in intensity of headaches.

Conclusion: Chiropractic adjustments, which focus on the reduction of vertebral subluxation, appeared to be beneficial for a female patient suffering from headaches with complicating factors of Type I Chiari Malformation and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. The patient had previously received manual technique approaches with no resolution of the headaches.  Using an instrument to adjust, a reduction of subluxation was seen in the cervical spine, along with reduced frequency and intensity of headaches.
