Abstract/Notes

Preeclampsia (PE) is among the most common causes of pregnancy related morbidity and mortality.  Not only are there short term effects, such as increased change of preterm birth, maternal mortality and small gestational age, but long term effects in both the mother and fetus are well documented.  Currently there are methods to accurately predict the onset or progression of the pathology, although many biomarkers and demographic stats have been used.  Genetic screening for DNA polymorphisms is a newly developing field, with the potential to change numerous aspect of patient-based care.  New evidence has elucidated a number of genetic mutations that are directly correlated with an increased risk of PE.  Further, overall methylation deficiencies have been identified and corrected via nutrigenomic therapies.  This purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential use of genetic screening and methylation support to reduce the probability of PE development and progression during pregnancy.
