Abstract/Notes

The founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, claimed that he learned the principles of chiropractic from a Dr. Jim Atkinson.  There has been no documentation or information ever found on this individual.  Because of recent information found on Palmer's involvement in spiritualism, a more likely individual that fits Palmer's description of Jim Atkinson would be spiritualist William Jasper Atkinson, M.D.  This article reviews W.J. Atkinson's medical and spiritualist writings and compares them with what Palmer attributes to Jim Atkinson.  There is strong circumstantial evidence that W.J. and Jim may be one and the same person.
