Abstract/Notes

Objective: To describe the evaluation and conservative management of an infant who presented for chiropractic care with a previous diagnosis of reflux and colic.

Clinical Features: A one month old male infant previously diagnosed by his medical doctor with reflux and colic.  The infant has had reflux and colic symptoms since birth.  He was not responding to previously prescribed medication, resulting in 12-18 reflux episodes per day.  He was crying constantly, resulting in deprivation of sleep for the infant and his parents.

Interventions and Outcomes:  A course of conservative management was carried out.  This consisted of 6 chiropractic visits, over a three week period, utilizing the Diversified technique adapted for pediatric adjusting.  Chiropractic adjustments included C1, T4, and the sacrum.  At the reassessment, 3 weeks later, the child had reduced his reflux episodes to 3 times per day.  In addition, he began eating more per feeding, had eliminated his colic episodes and was sleeping six and a half hours per night.

Conclusions:  The chiropractic care of an infant presenting with reflux and colic symptoms showed significant improvement within a three week period.   More research is warranted however to better understand the effect of chiropractic care on reflux and colic.
