Abstract/Notes

Objective: To describe in a case report format the chiropractic care of a child with headaches, neck pain, and long-standing constipation.

Clinical Features: A 7-year-old-male presented for care with complaints of chronic constipation, headaches, neck pain. The boy suffered from constipation since the age of three.  The constipation was described as infrequent and difficult for “him to go.” At age 5, enemas were medically prescribed at three times per week but provided temporary relief. By age 6, stool softeners and the laxative MiraLax were prescribed. Three to four weeks prior to chiropractic care, the boy had bowel movements of once per week.

Interventions and Outcomes: The patient was cared for utilizing Gonstead Technique characterized as high velocity, low amplitude adjustments to sites of vertebral subluxations. Over the course of 6 weeks, the patient attended a total of 10 visits. Following 10 visits, the patient’s mother reported that her son had bowel movements of 5-6 times per week without the need for laxatives.

Conclusion: This case report provides supporting evidence that children with constipation may benefit from spinal adjustments to sites of vertebral subluxations.
