A retrospective investigation was undertaken to determine whether there is a relationship between 1) atlas laterality and 2) atlas laterality and rotation, as measured by specific upper cervical x-ray analysis, and the force vectors induced to the head and neck by cervical acceleration- deceleration (CAD) trauma in motor vehicle accident (MVA). The MVA's of 35 specially screened subjects were analyzed to determine a vector of angular acceleration of the head and neck. The results were compared to the findings of atlas laterality/laterality & rotation based on properly aligned nasium/vertex X-rays. A significant statistical concordance was found (K=.88) for measured atlas laterality and the MVA vector of angular acceleration. A fair correlation (K=.36) was calculated for atlas laterality & rotation. Case study examples are given, and the potential for the predictive value of this type of analysis is discussed. An appeal was made to field practitioners using similar methods of examination to expand the database; a form to record the information was included.
