The age of personalized nutrition has arrived. Information from the Human Genome and HapMap projects has opened up the promising new field of Nutrigenomics. This interface of genomics and nutrition can promote health or promote disease. About 3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) have been deposited in public databases. From this information genetic tests have been developed for certain SNP's that can determine disease risk. We now have the ability to predict which phenotypes are more affected by specific types of dietary factors than other phenotypes. Nutrigeninomics is based on the following precepts:
1. Poor nutrition can be a risk factor for disease;
2. Common dietary chemicals can act on the human genome to alter gene expression;
3. The degree to which diet influences the balance between health and disease depends on an individual's genetic makeup;
4. Some diet related genes play a role in the onset, incidence, progression and severity of chronic diseases, and
5. Dietary intervention based on knowledge of nutritional requirement, nutritional status, and genotype can be used to prevent, mitigate, or cure chronic disease. It is now possible for diet and nutritional intervention to be personalized to the genetic characteristics of the individual, the nutritional phenotype.
