Abstract/Notes Government-driven changes to the healthcare profession in the UK are presenting traditional medicine with enormous challenges and greater upheaval than at any other time, perhaps, since the introduction on the National Health Service (NHS). Key to these changes is the concept of a patient-led NHS, in which patients are empowered to make decisions about their own care and offered choices as to what treatment they receive and how and where this is implemented.This has profound implications for both clinicians and their Collegiate bodies and it is vital that both have input into the decision making process. As the nature of health care and its funding continues to change, it will affect both private and public sectors. This presentation discussed the likely nature of such change and the probable requirements of and effect upon professional life with particular reference to evidence-based practice; quality of care; delivery of care and the increasing importance of working within care teams; equality of patient choice and adapting the healthcare infrastructure.
