Abstract/Notes James Dillard, DC, MD, author of The Chronic Pain Solution, says that today’s chronic pain management programs have shortcomings. “The major gap,” he says, “is the focus on reimbursable procedures—especially injections and pharmaceuticals. Our system is set up to stick needles in people. What chronic pain patients need is relationship, understanding, listening, and time.” The difference between what patients tend to get and what they need isn’t just a gap, he says, but “a huge hole.”

The article discussed effective coping strategies and what to do when the patient’s central nervous system seems to be turning every sensory signal into one that hurts.
