Abstract/Notes Many of today’s impairment assessments are performed incorrectly, leading to unnecessary costs and legal problems. Multiple potential sources of error in the performance of quantitative physical examinations may result from the need for improvements in the provider’s examination technique or from misunderstanding of protocols used in patient evaluation. Problems may stem from the patient/examinee’s having difficulty in understanding directions or giving less than full compliance and maximal effort. While the provider may make mistakes as a result of bias that arises from the therapeutic bond with the patient, it is believed that the greatest source of error is due to test administrator inexperience or lack of knowledge.
