Abstract/Notes Communication of a deep and meaningful nature is crucial to both the doctor of chiropractic and the deaf patient. Without it, the door is left open for misunderstandings and misinterpretations. To establish and maintain that communication, it is imperative for the DC to have a basic understanding of cultural and linguistic protocols pertinent to the communication needs of the deaf patient. Often, the terms "deaf," "hard of hearing," or "hearing impaired" imply defectiveness or disability-something that must be remedied-and/or intellectual abilities not on a par with hearing people. Such descriptors are erroneous. .
