Abstract/Notes

Objective: Describe the habits prevalent in Québec’s chiropractic practice regarding the prescription of exercise.

Methodology: Postal survey of chiropractors belonging to the Québec Order of Chiropractors completed on a voluntary, anonymous basis.

Results: 403 Québec chiropractors (37.6%)returned the completed questionnaire. Stretching and strengthening exercises are prescribed more often than are posture or proprioception exercises. Moreover, they are used more frequently for clinical conditions in chronic phase than acute phase. Chiropractors resort more often to prescription of exercises for the cervical and lumbar anatomical regions than for the thoracic region and the extremities. The exercises are more often used for adults and the elderly than for children and adolescents.

Conclusion: Prescription of exercises is perceived as an important element in chiropractic treatment and is used by a majority of those responding to the survey. Neither gender nor number of years of experience are factors that appear to influence Québec chiropractors’exercise prescription habits. The majority of chiropractors believe that a computer-based tool could facilitate the prescription of exercises in their clinic.
