Abstract/Notes Albert Edward Tizard was a wide-spectrum alternative medicine healthcare provider at a time and in a place where this was very unusual. Only now, in the early part of the 21st century, are alternative approaches to healthcare beginning to become widely accepted in South Wales in the United Kingdom. Tizard practiced chiropractic, developed his own formulas for herbal medicines, ran a health food store, and dabbled in iridology as well as electrically-based therapies, starting in the early part of the 20th century and continuing through the 1950s. His interest in these fields was spurred by an unknown experience in China where he was stationed with the Royal Navy during World War I. He taught engineering as a civilian for the Air Force during World War II in several locations in England, and finally settled in Barry, Wales, in 1938. All during this time he practiced his own hybrid brand of healthcare on evenings and weekends. Turning down a request to enlist in the Air Force, he decided to practice full-time finally in 1945. Word of his services spread from Barry, and he opened a second practice in Monmouth, in the eastern part of South Wales, in 1950. He split his time between these two until his death in 1956.
